Common Ant Species

Oderous House Ants

The odorous house ant is native to most of the entire United States ranging from Canada into Mexico and are extremely common in North Idaho and Spokane. These ants feed on many different items including most items found in homes but tend to prefer matter high in sugar content. They tend to be smaller than their Carpenter Ant counterparts and can be found trailing through kitchens in homes all across the Northwest. Odorous House Ants are most likely to enter homes after heavy rains when it is attempting to escape flooding of their shallow nest sites. Odorous house ants are tiny but fast. They usually travel in lines, but if they are disturbed or alarmed they will run around erratically, releasing odor as they run.

You can usually identify Odorous House ants by crushing one, they are most commonly reported to have a "rotten coconut" odor.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter Ant species reside both outdoors and indoors in moist, decaying, or hollow wood, most commonly in forested environments. Unknown to most people, Carpenter Ants do not actually eat the wood they damage. They cut "galleries" into the wood grain to provide passageways to allow for movement between different sections of the nest. Certain parts of a house, such as around and under windows, roof eaves, decks and porches, are more likely to be infested by carpenter ants because these areas are most vulnerable to moisture.

It can be hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to controlling ants. The truth is, there are tons of ways to do it! Since ants don't all come in one shape, size, or species, it can be tough to find out which ant treatment will work for the ant colony that has made your wall voids their home. Most pesticides you can buy at any of the big box stores tend to work in very limited ways and in some cases can be completely ineffective depending on the ant species you are dealing with. We work with many home owners and businesses in CDA, Post Falls, Hayden, Spokane, and the surrounding areas to identify the type of ants they are dealing with to form a targeted treatment. Every situation is different and so are the ways to treat for ants.

Why are ants inside my house?

There are many reasons ants can decide to hangout in your safe space. Since ants are living creature they tend to want to stay alive just as much as you do, even though they might not realize it themselves. Sometimes they are just passing by and may end up leaving you alone after a short amount of time. Unfortunately, most of the time when ants are in your residents they are there to stay. Unless you do something about them, they will not go away. In fact, if you don't do anything about an ant population in your home, they will grow and grow until it can become unbearable for you. We recommend wiping kitchen counter tops clean and keeping floors clear of food particles and crumbs.

Spokane and Kootenai County does have a high population of carpenter ants and those specific ants can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your home.
