Wasps and hornets can be a serious threat if a hive is formed in close proximity to a home. Unlike bees, these pests can sting repeatedly, and are typically much more aggressive. Wasps are popping up a little early this season as well, so here’s a few tips on identification and prevention.
Wasps prefer building nests in commonly undisturbed areas, but can also build nests just about anywhere - as long as there is a horizontal base to hang from. Common nesting spots include eaves, porch ceilings and overhangs, and unsealed vents. Hornets, like the bald faced hornet, will typically build their nest on dense shrubs or trees, and tree hollows. We recommend carefully checking these common nesting sites every once in a while, because when left unchecked their nests can grow large and result in much more wasp activity around the home.
Wasps and hornets feed on a multitude of different substances, from proteins to sugars. Some common attractants are hummingbird feeders, sugary drinks left outside, meat proteins left on recently used barbecues, and just other insects in general. Most of these attractants are simple to mitigate, just make sure to remove any attractants listed above after any outdoor picnic or barbecue, and relocate hummingbird feeders if wasps are spotted on them.
